2nd DAPS workshop: Applying and comparing proxy system models and data assimilation methods

The 2nd Paleoclimate Reanalyses, Data Assimilation and Proxy System modeling (DAPS) working group workshop will be held from 29-31 May 2019 in College Park, MD, USA.

Venue

College Park, MD, near the University of Maryland campus, NCEP, in the Washington, DC, metro area.

Logistics

This is a semi-open workshop for approximately 20-30 people, with half of the attendants already involved in DAPS and who will directly contribute to the planned products. The other half will be representative of PAGES groups who could apply data assimilation techniques or proxy system models in their field and participants asking for invitation based on relevant expertise or interest in the subject.

Overview

This workshop will be the second and final one for DAPS. Two initiatives have recently been launched: an intercomparison of data assimilation techniques focusing on the recent past and a data-model intercomparison experiment for forest and carbonate forming sensors. Several groups have agreed to participate in those initiatives. The first goal of the workshop is to discuss the results of these initiatives, and finalize the resulting papers.

Those studies will also provide examples of relevant techniques and will likely stimulate other initiatives focusing on different periods and other proxy system models. The first workshop, in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, identified several potential candidates but it was not practically possible to proceed with all of them. The second goal of the workshop is to identify domains for which new initiatives are possible and contribute to launching them so that they can develop independently of DAPS after 2019. Potential studies can be focused on the Last Glacial Maximum, the last deglacial, simulation of pollen observations, speleothems, fires, and ocean biogeochemical and proxy tracers (e.g. 14C, Pa/Th and Nd isotopes).

The final objective of DAPS is to stimulate the combined use of proxy system models and data assimilation. The conclusion of the Louvain-la-Neuve workshop was that many problems still needed to be solved before such usage becomes routine in paleoscience. The third goal of the workshop is thus to provide answers to some of the key questions and set the path for future developments.
