PhD position, micropaleontology/paleoecology/geochemistry - Bremen, Germany

The Cluster of Excellence "Ocean Floor – Earth’s Uncharted Interface", hosted at the Research Faculty MARUM (Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences), at the University of Bremen, Germany, invites applications for a PhD position in the field of micropaleontology/paleoecology/geochemistry, within the framework of the project: Oceanic bioproductivity in warm climates.

Logistics

The position is for three years. The earliest starting date is 1 January 2019. Salary corresponds to 66,6% TV-L E13. The employment is fixed-term and governed by the Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract, §2 I (Wissenschaft szeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG).

Description

The project is a contribution to the Cluster effort in understanding of climate-ecosystem-biogeochemistry feedbacks as a function of climate state. Using marine sediment records, you will study the interplay between climate, biodiversity, productivity and biomineralisation in key groups of marine carbonate producers.

The research work in the project involves sampling and analysis of sediments from marine sediment cores, micropaleontological analyses, including biometry, geochemical analyses of carbon-cycle parameters, interpretation of results, integration of published data, preparation of scientific publications and presentations at international conferences.

The search is underway for an enthusiastic, innovative and committed researcher with interest in marine micropaleontology, paleoceanography and geochemistry. The PhD student will be hosted by the Micropaleontology/Paleoceanography group at MARUM and supervised by a team of experienced scientists working within the Cluster of Excellence.

Additional training and support is provided by the Bremen International Graduate School for Marine Sciences, GLOMAR, which offers expert- and transferrable-skills courses, coaching, networking opportunities, and the opportunity to compete for additional internal funds. In this way, the PhD student will acquire a solid background across multiple disciplines of marine sciences.

Requirements

- Completed MSc or equivalent degree in geosciences, environmental sciences or related fields
- Knowledge of micropalaeontology, geochemistry, and (paleo)oceanography
- Experience with analysis and interpretation of marine sediment cores including stratigraphy and age models
- Ability to apply quantitative data-analysis techniques, including multivariate statistics and time-series analysis
- Applicants should be fluent in English, have excellent writing skills and enjoy working in an international and interdisciplinary team.
